Location

Plaža Podrače

Podrače sits 400 metres west of Punta Rata, a 200-metre crescent of smooth pebble backed by pines. The water is genuinely clear—you'll see your feet at three metres depth—and the beach fills more slowly than its famous neighbour, which matters if you're arriving after breakfast in July.

Timing and Footwear

After 10:00 in July or August, you're hunting for towel space between families who arrived at 08:00. The pebbles are smooth but murder on soft feet—water shoes aren't optional here unless you enjoy an awkward shuffle into the sea while nearby swimmers watch. Early September solves the crowd problem. June mornings solve both problems.

Parking at Punta Rata costs money (paid by the hour, fills by 09:00 in summer). Factor this in, or walk fifteen minutes from central Brela down the coastal path through the pines.

Why It Works for Families

The slope here is genuinely gentle—rare on this coast. You can stand waist-deep ten metres out while children paddle in shallows that warm faster than open water. Basic facilities work: free showers, changing cabins, toilets. Sun loungers and umbrellas are available (prices vary by season, no posted rates, expect €15–20 per set in August).

The western rocks shelter decent snorkeling—small fish, interesting formations, that clear water again. Bring your own mask. Rental in Brela is limited and costs more than it should.

A café operates from the beach. Espresso runs €2.50, sandwiches €6–8. Adequate for caffeine, not for lunch. Eat in Brela before or after.

Practical Notes

Access: From Brela's coastal road (Obala kralja Tomislava), follow signs toward Punta Rata. Podrače sits immediately west, reached by paved path. Fifteen minutes on foot from central Brela, three minutes from Punta Rata parking.

Water entry: The pebbles are smooth but tightly packed. Bottom drops at a manageable angle. Water shoes eliminate the foot problem entirely.

Months: June brings 22–24°C water, fewer people. Early September delivers 24–25°C water, same crowd advantage. July-August peak at 25–26°C water, arrive before 09:00 or accept density.

Bring: Water shoes (essential), snorkel gear (if you swim), sun protection (limited natural shade), cash for loungers, your own water (café prices don't justify buying there).

Podrače delivers clear Adriatic water and pine-backed pebble beach without Punta Rata's crush. Less dramatic scenery, fewer amenities, but for families with children or anyone who snorkels, the trade makes sense. Solve the timing and the footwear, and you have a functional beach day.
